The Architects’ Council of Europe very much welcomes the report Towards a Shared Culture of Architecture published this week and congratulates the experts of the Member States who have contributed to this excellent piece of work. The report highlights the importance of investing in a high-quality living environment and includes recommendations to public authorities, professionals and stakeholders on the many ways high-quality architecture can improve our built environment for the benefit of everyone.
As part of its 2019-2022 Work Plan for Culture, the Council of the European Union set up an expert group, using the Open Method of Coordination (OMC) focusing on High-quality architecture and built environment for everyone. Over the last two years, 39 experts nominated by 23 Member States (plus Norway and Switzerland) collaborated closely with the aim of addressing current challenges and long-term strategies for our living environment.
The final report of the expert group was presented on 6 October 2021 on the occasion of the Building Europe conference, held in Graz (Austria) and Maribor (Slovenia).
Recommendations included in this report build on recent European developments, such as the Davos Process, the New Leipzig Charter, the urban agenda for the EU, the Green Deal and the New European Bauhaus, to name a few.
The Architects’ Council of Europe will endeavour to promote this report towards national, regional and local public authorities and calls on the EU institutions to duly take into account the recommendations when developing policies and initiatives impacting on the built environment and the construction eco-system.
ACE President georg pendl, who contributed to the work of the OMC Group, said: "The publication of the final report of the OMC group is a positive step forward for the architectural and the Baukultur community. It is the excellent result of a long and fruitful process. We spend 90% of our time in buildings and the vast majority of people live in cities. Therefore, the buildings we design are crucial for the quality of life for everyone and affordability is of vital importance. However, achieving excellence in the built environment doesn’t need to be expensive - but it does need to be future-orientated, nature-based, integrative, democratic - and must take everybody on board".
By the end of November, the Slovenian Presidency of the EU Council is expected to propose Council conclusions on high quality in architecture and the built environment. This will ensure a lasting legacy of the work carried out by the expert group, helping Member States to take ownership of the results and follow up on the recommendations.
